Black Americana VOL. 1 – Island In The Sun
Recently, I was checking my Fashion Citizen inbox and I came across an email that read "Black Americana" in the subject line. I was intrigued and as I began to read about this project and the ideas behind it, I knew I had to bring it to my readers. Often times, we're inundated in America with the images of Black America as we were and not so much in a positive way. Although a lot of what our ancestors did was behind the scenes, they lived life and had good times as well. The joy of seeing "the good times" depicted in this project by Brandon Littlejohn was awesome, so check out what Taylor Lewis had to say about the inner workings of the project, Black Americana.
Creative Producer, Brandon Littlejohn, and Photographer, Rod Gailes OBC, are collaborating to create a brilliant four-part photography series that showcases classic American settings through an Afro-Elite lens. The “Black Americana” series encourages African Americans to challenge societal messages about Blackness, while aspiring to higher levels of art and education on their own terms. Creating opportunities in the creative industry via a collective effort and artistically challenging the way African Americans have been conditioned to see themselves are two main goals of the “Black Americana” series. - Taylor N.
