Fashion Citizen Spotlight – Alexandra of The Good Hair Blog
Fashion Citizen spotlights aren't just for the designers and fashion industry folks, fashion citizens are people who embody confidence and uniqueness in their everyday life. Today we highlight the editrix of The Good Hair Blog and the woman behind Safi Natural Hair Care, Alexandra. Very few people carry off the one name ideal and this young lady is one of them. After the "more" check out our interview.
Fashion Citizen : Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview Alex. First, can you tell the readers a little about yourself and your company Safi Natural Hair Care?
Alexandra : Well, my name is Alexandra. I am a 21 year old single mother, Media Journalism student and entrepreneur—along with a few other things but that’s the jist of my life. I started my product line a little over a year ago after I transitioned from relaxed to natural. Often, I tell folks that Safi was a spoof- which is true. The idea for Safi was born in an entrepreneurship class I needed to take for my major. I never imagined that my line would become quite this popular in the natural hair community. It’s great that I am able to connect with my customers and give them quality hair products that they love. Everything in my line is made from all natural ingredients and many of the main ingredients are organic. I think it’s very important that natural hair is treated with care and “fed good food” so that it can flourish and maintain good health.
Safi, I think, helps naturals achieve both of those things. I have a lot of regulars who come back whenever I re-open shop which is like 3x a year, they buy up everything! I love it and the feeling of giving other naturals quality products that they “can’t live without” makes me feel so good! The hard work put into running a business is definitely rewarding. I love what I do.
FC: How do you feel being a woman with natural hair, enhances your beauty?
A : Being natural, at least for me, forces me to be confident and confidence aides in being beautiful. African American women struggle with their hair/skin color and the stigma that goes along with it. I think a lot of us conform ourselves to fit society and to please others, when in reality the opinion of others should be miniscule when it comes to personal choices. Being able to say I love me and everything about me took a lot; I don’t think I started to love myself whole heartedly until my daughter turned two. I wanted to make and set good examples for her; self love is one of those things that has to be demonstrated and I wanted her to see that her mom is strong and confident.
Going natural became a spiritual thing for me—doing it for me and no one else made me feel secure and beautiful. Keep in mind this is my 3rd time going natural and I think that diving into it head first and sticking to it this time has been my greatest and most rewarding challenge. Being natural is not just a trend now, it’s a movement. Women are finding themselves and standing firm in their decision, which I think enhances beauty in itself.
FC : With the warm weather right around the corner, what are some new trends you are looking forward to trying out?
A : I am so excited for the weather to break! When it gets warm outside, I swear I feel like a whole new person. During the warmer months I love wearing dresses and skirts. I’ve actually been stocking up on a lot of the flutter sleeve dresses and tops in bold/bright colors. I am not a very “trendy” person--I rarely follow fashion trends. I am more of “I like what I like” type of gal! If it’s well made, looks good on my body type and if the piece has the potential to be TIMELESS I will get it. My boyfriend always stresses that people need to start shopping for timeless and excellent quality pieces that will last for a life time. I happen to agree, it’s not the quantity so much for me more than it is the quality.
FC: Bright neon colors are a big trend this spring, how do you plan to interpret that trend into your style? If you don't plan on it, why not?
A : Neon colors can be incorporated in an outfit and look good when done right, I am not at all against wearing an electric blue or neon green in moderation. I really like pairing soft colors with a punch of something really bright. Knowing me, I will probably grab a neon colored belt or clutch just to have when it’s time to be daring and add a loud color to an outfit. I also LOVE my freshly manicured nails to be painted bright in the summer. I keep my nails very short so I think adding a hint of neon to my fingertips would be a great way to incorporate it into my style.
FC: Your style to me seems so easy and free but still very chic. What are your go to pieces when the weather gets warm?
A : I’d say that my go to pieces for the warm weather are flowy dresses, boyfriend style jeans or jeans that I can cuff—I am a sucker for designer denim, ballet flats-I cannot live without my Tory Burch flats, a nice platform wedge and white tees/tanks/camisoles. It gets no better than that for me. OH, let’s not forget a great pair of big earrings paired with chunky rings!
FC: I've seen on Twitter that you plan on delving into accessories, what brought this on?
A : Yes, I am dabbling in starting my own feather earring collection! I am super excited about this, when I get these random creative thoughts in my head I usually act on them. Twitter has been a great idea outlet for me because I am able to get feedback on my random creations from my followers. If other folks love it and want it, I try and create it, not just for me but for them too.
FC: Thanks so much for interview Alex, are there any parting words for our readers and please, please tell us where we can find your products.
A : You are so welcome and thank you for having me! You can find my products by going to http://thegoodhairblog.com and clicking the shop tab, which will direct you to my online store.
