Fashion/Music Mash-up – Beyoncé – Beyoncé (@beyonce) – Part 1
Unless you were under a rock this weekend, you know that in the wee hours of Friday, December 13, 2013 Beyonce Knowles released her self-titled 5th studio album. It's not JUST an album, the superbly talented entertainer called it a visual album as it contains 18 videos along with 14 tracks. She wanted her audience to see the music she's so passionate about. I was a fan of her last album and anticipated this one but what she released far exceeded what I thought Beyonce would do. No, I'm not a stan...I had just become used to the pretty Beyonce who sang and looked pretty. This self titled album is pretty much the rawest and most passionate we've seen Mrs. Carter and it's pretty cool to see her finally let her hair down and do what she wants. I figured this was an awesome opportunity, with it being a visual album, to bring back the fashion/music mash-up. I selected looks from most of the videos and figured out a way for my readers to adapt it so they can wear it too.
The first of this visual feast is called Pretty Hurts. It's actually a vulnerable song that describes our society's obsession with fixing the outside to remedy what is really a much deeper issue. It's bold of Beyoncé, who's a pretty girl herself to come out and say that being pretty isn't all there is to life. In the video, she's in a party dress with a star print and bunny ear accessories and star chandelier earrings. I pulled the inspiration from a close up of the look and selected a star printed crewneck with a white collar and black coated denim. Accessories include the bunny ears, although not the ones from the video but a very close resemblance and star studs. Simple black heels complete the look.
This particular video has a sinister vibe to it with high sex appeal. The song describes a rather intense love that haunts the man as much as the woman and their intense love making seems to be the intended goal. Beyoncé starts the video in what looks to be a vintage inspired look. This look was fairly easy to replicate and you could actually wear to the office sans the Louis Vuitton vanity case. I pulled in pinstripe pants, a crisp white shirt and a fitted sleek black blazer. Bey had the shirt a little open and a black pussy bow scarf tied around her neck and I pulled a similar scarf in from an Etsy shop. Bey slid into this beautiful lobby in Saint Laurent T-Strap pumps, if you're not able to get those the Just Fab t-straps will give you a similar look. A vintage faux snow leopard coat and vintage Louis Vuitton vanity case finish of this Victor/Victoriaesque look.
We woke up in the kitchen saying how did this sh** happen, oh baby....If we didn't know that Bey & Jay had an active love life this song pretty much informs us. She makes no bones about letting her man know how much she wants him and he raps back to her that his want for her is just as intense. In the video Bey is in a sheer dress and black bikini underneath. I toned down the look just a bit with a dress with a sheer hi-lo skirt and sexy high heeled sandals...a date night type of look. Spiky drop earrings and a faux fur knuckle ring clutch add interest to this sultry look. Ready to get drunk in love?
So this track is full of candy metaphors and since that's the case, I'll let you draw your own conclusion as to what Bey is all about on this one. The video was full of brights, neons and prints including a $30,000 Versace fur. I decided to pull this look from the image above when Bey is walking into the skating rink where most of the video takes place. I pulled in a printed legging from Boohoo and since I know that there are varying levels of modesty among my readers, there are several different tops for you to choose from depending on what you want to show or hide. The yellow printed fur that Bey wore was too hot to not try and find an option for, we've got it with this Topshop Gilet (vest). This look is not for the shrinking violet, then again, if you're digging this song I'm sure wallflower is the last word anyone uses to describe you. Strappy heels add just a bit more spice to an already smoking look.
Yoncé finds Bey in full on brag. She's walking into a club and she knows that she's the center of attention. The only thing on her mind is how good she looks...to her man. All the people around her are checking for her and sizing her up but she just cares about her man being drawn to her sexiness. This video was FULL of great looks from Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent to Herve Leger. I selected a cool look that found Bey beat boxing on a brick wall. A bra top might or might not be your look so I just selected a crop top with fringes that resemble the detail on Bey's bra top. Lacy slouch pants in gray, another semblance of Bey's look, make this look cool for a weekend out with friends. Athletic inspired ankle booties toughen the look up but don't diminish the sex appeal. Bey's layered necklace look is copied here with a layered cross necklace.
Partition is an in your face bass thumping track where Bey rap sings at a rapid fire pace. Bey is directing her driver to bring up the partition in her luxury transport because she wants to do some adult things with her man and she'd like to be somewhat discreet. If you've heard the track, you know she might as well have kept the partition down for all that was going on in that back seat. Bey's drop dead sexy look here just begged to be replicated. Since Bey's lingerie is the star here, I selected an Agent Provocateur garter belt and demi bra. Adding to this boudoir look, lacy thigh highs and sky high red pumps cap off what this woman is sure to end up wearing the most. I added a sheer tee and black mini skirt because there has to be a little mystery to this romp in the Maybach. Finally, a fedora, trench and jeweled drop earrings will have you ready to roll up your own partition...don't forget to say please.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's continuation of the rest of our Fashion/Music Mash Up for Beyonce's latest album.
