Guest Beauty Blog by @thepbg – Make Up 101
Today's post is from an awesome guest blogger, The Pretty Brown Girl or as I know her, CaShawn. She is the brains behind Dirty Pretty Thangs, a beauty and lifestyle blog that I highly recommend. She has blessed this blog today with a beauty post on her own make up regimen and some of her favorite products...so without further ado...
Make Up 101
I tend to get a lot of compliments and comments on my makeup, so when The Fashion Citizen asked me to submit a post on beauty for his blog I thought a breakdown of my regimen and favorite products would be a great idea:
I use a lot of different brands, but for my foundation I use a regular old drugstore brand called Black Opal. I found my perfect shade ("Carob") in that line years ago and stuck with it. I lucked up doing that, but I recommend that every woman go to a professional makeup counter and have one of the pros help you find your proper shade. Nothing looks worse than having your face be a completely different shade from the rest of your body because you have on the wrong foundation.
I'm not one of those ladies that live & die for MAC products. While they are very good, they tend to be very pricey, at least for me and my particular lifestyle. The women who think they're on the cutting edge using MAC exclusively don't even know that MAC is owned by Estee Lauder, one of the oldest cosmetics companies in the game. The one product I absolutely love by MAC is their Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer. It helps cover the darkness around my eyes and any blemishes I might have from what are now just OCCASIONAL pimples (praise the God of your understanding)! I had horrible acne as a teenager so I'm always grateful for having such clear skin now.
My favorite brand of eyeshadow is the L'Oreal HiP(High Intensity Pigment) line. They have awesomely vibrant colors and the quality is as good as MAC. I'm also a fan of the HiP eyeliners as well. They apply as a pencil but give you a smooth liquid look. I use Too Faced Shadow Insurance to keep my eyeshadow from creasing and make sure it stays in place. My favorite lipsticks and glosses are by NYX which you can either order online or find in some beauty supply stores You can find ALL of this stuff at Ulta ( www.ulta.com ), which is one of my favorite stores. Be sure to get yourself a good brush set. Sonia Kashuk makes a great brand and it's sold at Target. It's important to keep your brushes clean. I use plain shampoo and let them air dry. As for application technique, Youtube tutorials are my favorite resource. There are thousands of videos to check out and learn to do your own makeup. I've literally spent hours watching and I can say I've learned a lot. Anybody can learn!
The most important part of my makeup game is basic skin care. I drink LOTS of water and use a good moisturizing cleanser each day. I recommend Cetaphil or African black soap. I use regular old Witch Hazel on a cotton ball to get any leftover dirt from my skin after washing. I exfoliate twice a week and use Ambi moisturizing fade cream to keep an even complexion and take care of any scarring I might get from angry pimples. If I do get a pimple, I use simple kitchen recipes to cure them: oatmeal & honey masks or honey & cinnamon for spot treatments. I go without makeup most of the time or do very minimalistic looks, just to let my skin breathe.
I think any woman can enhance her natural beauty with makeup. It's all a matter of starting out with a good basic skincare regimen, then choosing the right tools and products and mastering her technique through practice.
CaShawn also included a pic of her sans make up and all made up for a night out...check out the evidence of her great advice below
