Menswear Minute : Poolside Essentials
What better way to enjoy warm weather than lounging by a nice body of water. Whether you are sitting by a pool or a by an ocean, it's important to have a few essentials. Sunblock, sunglasses, and an iPod full of your best tunes aside, there are a few things that should go along with you while you lounge during the warm days ahead of us.
The essentials are simple, pool shoes, a hat to protect you from the sun, an insulated bottle and swimming trunks.
A throw away pair of shoes you wear to and from the beach or pool are a no go. Everything about your style should be intentional, even your lounge wear. If you're more of a traditionalist, go with a pair of Havaianas. They're traditional flip flops with a little polish added. You won't have to worry about running in to a child with your same pair on. You can match them to your swim trunks or get an interesting pair to spark conversation at your local pool. For the gent looking to go from the pool to a chill lunch or from the beach to an indoor raw bar, the Adidas by Raf Simons Two Tone Adilette sandal is the way to go. This slide comes in 3 different color combos and a black pair called the Pendant Adilette sandal. These are comfy enough to take you to the pool but stylish enough when paired with shorts to get you a good seat at a beach side food spot.
Protecting your eyes and head from the heat is a must. It helps you take a quick nap if you want by the water or read your summer fiction picks. Any style of hat can work but again, style is intentional. A fedora like the one above from Mr. Kim is perfect. It's going to keep your head protected and it's constructed in a way that won't have sweat running down in your eyes. There are straw options available from Mr. Kim along with a few bucket hats. You could also check out the Sierra hats from Obey. These wide brim hats are a little more casual than the fedora, but they will offer the same sun protection without sacrificing style.
While you're relaxing and luxuriating, you might need a cool drink. It could be water, could be a pre-mixed spirited beverage, it's completely up to you. Either way, nothing is worse than a warm drink in hot weather. S'well insulated bottles come in a variety of sizes, the one above being the 25 oz. Tuxedo bottle. Keeps your drink chilled and discreet. Maybe you can get two, one for water and one for something a little more adventurous.
The best part about hot weather is cooling off in the water. It's just as important to look good when you go in as you did chilling pool or ocean side. You can choose from board shorts that are grazing the knee, other trunks are going to hit you about mid thigh and there are ones that resemble trunk boxers. I'd suggest a nice middle length so that you don't feel like you're swimming in your clothes but that you're comfortable enough sitting pool side without feeling naked. Faherty has swim trunks that hit at the perfect length and come in a variety of prints that will go great when you throw a t-shirt on after the pool for drinks. Parke & Ronen also has a wide variety of prints and to amp it up you can find a few different lengths with this brand as well. If you're looking for something a little different, keep perusing around East Dane's Shorts & Swim section and find your perfect pair.
